Vegan MoFo #6: Southern Comfort

Zatarain's jambalaya mix jazzed up with extra spices (cayenne, s&p, garlic & onion powders), add mushrooms, onions and the stems of the kale along with Gardien BBQ skewers chopped up. I usually use sausage but I had this and it worked out great, the bbq sauce gave it a good saucey texture.

I cooked the kale by steaming it then cooking with a little vegetable stock, red wine vinegar, s&p and fresh garlic. I sometimes make this meal with collard greens, whatever greens I have in the fridge.

Lazy rolls from one of those cardboard pop tubes, they came out alright (especially with some margarine)!

Sunday October 16th was the Grand Opening for Golden Road Brewing! Check out the website for more details. This was actually my first time visiting a brewery and it was fun to have it right here in Los Angeles. I can't wait for them to finish building their brew pub so I can go there again (and again.. and again..).

The breakfast burrito is one of the best foods ever invented (after pizza and regular burritos). I make these babies almost every morning. They are always slightly different, depending on what I have in the fridge and how much greasy goodness I am craving.

This is the "No Vegetables Allowed" Breakfast Burrito:

Vegan Mofo Post #2: Chkn Pot Pie

Yesterday was a rainy fall day in Los Angeles aka perfect comfort food weather! I made this Vegan Chicken Pot Pie from Vegan Dad. I love this site because his recipes are easy and delicious!

I modified it by adding 1 cup of white mushrooms, store bought puff pastry and instead of seitan used Gardien Chick'n Scallopini.

LA Vegan Beer Fest #2!

The Second Annual LA Vegan Beer Fest at The Roxy on the Sunset Strip was SOOO much fun! If you missed it then... I don't know what to tell you. Great beer, ALL vegan food, good bands, friendly attendees. The only negative was a got sunburned, meh. I went with fellow American Hot Pants blogmate @HelloDianaMarie. We got there early (VIP.. you know..) and stayed until the end so there was plenty of time for eating and drinking. Sadly we didn't get to try all of the food (Veg-It-Up, Luscious Organic Desserts, Franken's, Fresh Fries or Mandoline Grill) and I am probably missing a lot of the beers, but there were so many! Also check out my recap of last years LAVBF. Enjoy!

This is the first time I have been to Cruzer Pizza since they went 100% vegan AND I work down the street (for shame). After tonight I will definitely make it over there more often! Made it over to Madeleine Bistro for brunch this weekend! I hope they don't close forever I really want to try the rest of their menu!

San Fran

This weekend I went to San Francisco for the first time (since I was a baby)! I took the train/bus up there. I was visiting a friend who isn't veg so I found a few places before I left we could both enjoy.

Lucky for me he shares my love for a good beer so we drank lots of delicious beers, that we would have while we were out at the pubs watching the games or hanging at his pad such as Stone, Green Flash, Russian River, Speakeasy, Port Brewing, Pabst etc..

First night we went into Palo Alto to Patxi's and each ordered a Deep Dish Pan Pizza, mine had mushrooms, black olives & artichokes with Daiya Cheese (and an Arrogant Bastard on tap).

Went to get morning coffee at this cool coffee shop/movie store down the street, The Grind Coffee Bar/Movie Groove, and was surprised to see them selling Pepples Donuts so I had to get one!

Next day we went into the city wandering around Haight Street, stopping into Amoeba, looking at other shops down there we poked our head into Magnolia Pub which has its own brewery underneath!

Walked down the block to an Irish Pub where they were playing both Celtics & Giants games. We both ordered a round or 2 of Speakeasy Big Daddy's.

Next morning we went to Godfather's where I ordered the Fresh California Burger (avocado & garlic roasted bell peppers) with the veg patty, no cheese or mayo sauce.

After an epic nap session and going to a local pub in Redwood City to watch the Sharks game (& drink a few Port Brewing Wipeout IPAs) we went to Amici's Pizza, split a pitcher of beer and while the boys meat & cheesed out I was scarfing down this veggie pizza (roasted green peppers, sauteed mushrooms, caramelized onions, and black olives with Daiya Cheese)

Coming back on the train I went to the dining car where they had a good selection of Stone. Great way to end a great trip. I can't wait to visit again soon!

Dawn and I made the trek from Santa Monica to Burbank this Saturday morning (11:30) for the first coLAboration Beer Garden of the season!

We headed straight for the beer:

It was also almost closing time (about 6:20) and getting pretty chilly.

This was sooo much fun and we definitely will be coming back to the upcoming events, hopefully with a bigger group!

St Patty's Day At Native Foods!

Late post but for St Patty's Day my friend Dawn and I kicked off the night with a little Native Foods to try out the St Patty's Melt and 1/2 off beer and wine!

Creamy Artichoke Spinach Dip to share

Dawn's Oaklahoma Bacon Cheese Burger (with a tempeh patty instead of seitan), sweet potato fries and a glass of wine.

We made our way to The Otheroom where we had an Oaked Arrogant Bastard and a Rouge Dead Guy Ale both on tap (they have an AMAZING selection of beers, check it out!).

Then off to La Cabana for some $4 margaritas and a giant bowl of freshly made guacamole (good drink specials & open until 3am, last call is at 1:45am). If anyone knows if the beans have lard or the rice has chicken stock let me know! I am always down for a giant burrito at 3am.

We tried to go to a few places in between, but they were all dead past midnight.

YAY for adventures!! :D

Breakfast = Amy's frozen Roasted Vegetable Cheeseless Pizza. Add fresh shiitake mushrooms and Tofurkey Italian Sausage slices.

Lunch = Large Zpizza Tuscan Pizza (roasted garlic sauce, cremini, shiitake and button mushrooms, caramelized onions, truffle oil and thyme. No feta and sub Daiya for Moz).

Dinner = Pitfire Pizza "Be An Artist" Pizza with jalapeno, fresh basil and olive & sub Daiya for Moz. Along with Hitachino Nest Red.

Leftovers = Amy's & Zpizza (1/2 of each pie)

First year back in a few years at a family friends annual Thanksgiving dinner. Drank a few manhattans and ate 2 giant plates of food. There was a lot of vegan food that people brought so I didn't leave hungry! Thank you I love you all!!

clockwise: roasted root vegetables (made by dad), roasted garlicy brussel spouts (made by a guest), vegan/gluten free rice stuffing (made specially for my dad and I by our hostess), roasted garlic mash potatoes and gf mushroom gravy (made by me) and Field Roast hazelnut/cranberry stuffed roast.

Missing - sauteed kale with mushrooms, onion, garlic & red pepper flakes (made by me), vegan candied yams (made by same guest), cucumber/tomato/black olive greek salad - minus feta (made by another guest) and vegan/gf Pumpkin pie (made by mom).

LA Vegan Beer Fest

This Saturday I went to LA Vegan Beer Fest with my good friend Martin (who isn't vegan!) We got there a little late but it was still enough time to try all the beers and eat lots of food.

From the Seabirds Truck hummus nachos, potato and jackfruit taquitos and the locals burrito.

I forgot which hot dog we got from The Franken Stand but it was soo good.. it might have been the Franken?

We headed over to Doomie's a little late so the buffalo legs were sold out! But we still picked up some taquitos and a shrimp cocktail.

vegenaise

braggs

olive oil

slice up football fish

fry with olive oil and braggs

add a little spice

continue frying until a little crispy and browned

cook corn tortillas

sauce:

vegenaise, salsa and lemon/lime juice

mixed to taste

I have been in a food rutt. Nothing tasted good any more and all I could think about was pizza. Ever since the vegan cheese bug hit LA all I could think about was pizza. When would I eat pizza again. When could i get my fix. I thought why not just buy a bunch of cheese and make your own pizza and test out which cheese you like the best! So thats what I did. Here is the test between Cheezly Teese Follow Your Heart and Daiya:

I love how Cheezly melted but it may have melted a little too much into a pool of oil. Still it resembled real cheese on pizza but hardly had flavor.

Teese was good but it has a weird plastic look to it. But it sure does taste and smell good!

Follow Your Heart melted really well (despite people claiming it doesn't) and it tasted great and didn't really have any strange after taste or smell.

I probably have to buy the Daiya again because it came already shredded and it didnt melt as well as at Cruzers or I have seen on other blogs. Plus the Daiya sort of has a strange taste in the beginning then has a good after taste which is weird.

The results are the FYH is classic and easily available to buy and doesn't have any weird look smell or taste to it. I will buy Teese again (i have before and used it in baked pasta and was delicious!) I will also try the Daiya from the manufacturers and cut it up myself to see the results. And I most likely wont buy Cheezly again just because it was the most expensive and even though it was the best melted didn't amaze me with anything special. I chose not to test Sheese because I bought it before (when I bought the Teese) and I just didn't like it or thought it melted well at all.

Here is the train cake I made for Jeffs bday party this weekend, no he isn't turning 7 hes just cute like that! It was made in one of those cake mold tins and it turned out pretty well for my first time trying to make a cake look like something!

For Jeffs real birthday I made him a Cheesecake. Which came out delicious too even though the top looks scary:

Cupcakes and Pizza

Today was special because I got to visit Jamaica's Cakes and pick out my birthday cake!! Yay! I wont ruin the surprise yet but it's going to be delicious. I have never been there but I heard so many good things about it so I went ahead and got a cake without even trying anything else from them! But I did order a red velvet cupcake to go and mmmm yummy. I thought red velvet always had cream cheese frosting on it but this tasted more like butter cream, but it was still very good.

Now maybe I wont have to drive over to South Pasadena to get my cupcake fix like I did last week! Jk!! My Sweet Cupcake is worth the drive they have more creative flavors like last week they had margarita, the Elvis (peanut butter/banana), and plain vanilla. Vanilla was eh and the Elvis was pretty good but tasted like a banana muffin with peanut butter frosting, which is good but not quite a cupcake, but the margarita was definitely the best!

If Purgatory Pizza did not offer vegan pizzas then I don't know what we would do about stay-in-bed-drunk-watching-TV-on-DVD-all-day days. We would probably eat lots of bbq chips (and me sour patch kids or mambas) from the local mini mart or stumble Downtown/Echo Park somewhere but that would require not staying in bed all day. Last night we got 2 large pizzas yay! One was Field Roast Sausages/mushroom and the other Gardien Chicken/garlic.

Since I live in Culver City I don't go to Vegan Joint as often as it seems from my posts. But as far as Thai Vegan places are concerned I'd rather stay local and eat here! Its also on the way to where Jeff works. So the other day before work we decided to head over there for some lunch. Jeff got what I usually get, the most delicious combination of breakfast or any meal ever, tropical chicken pancakes. Its "tropical" (bananas and blueberries) pancakes, with a side of fried chicken. Why is chicken and pancakes so good together? I dont know. Its probably the same amazing deliciousness as fried chicken and waffles, which I have never had. And if that wasn't enough food, he got a side of grilled potatoes. I wanted to try something new so I ordered the spicy noodle soup. It was really good! The broth was just spicy enough and it tasted like it has some kind of citrus oil to it maybe lime? I love noodle soup like ramen and udon etc but this soup was different because they used a flat rice noodle. It also had tofu and the fish in it so for the money its the best noodle dish on the menu since everyother dish only has tofu and is $2 to add meats and thats what I was drawn to the most about this dish in the first place. It was a good change of pace and the fishies were really good in the soup. Til next time vegan joint...

Ok.. its been a while since I have updated. Bad me. But I come bearing pictures of delicious food so it's totally worth the wait right?

This is my attempt of making some kind of fake chicken, and it came out good except instead of brushing them with hot sauce I sort of maybe drowned them in the hot sauce. SO you live and learn. But the taste of chicken came out well I wanted to start my making of fake meats with something small so I don't ruin an entire meatloaf or something!

For Easter I made a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting (yuuuumm... oh wait I have leftovers brb!!)

Jeff hasn't been feeling so great the past week so one day for lunch we went to Scoops and got balsamic raspberry on both and I got almond oreo and Jeff got pistachio. Amazing as always:

The other night after a long photo shoot day we ordered the chicken pesto pizza from Purgatory. It was the first time we tried their new meat offerings and boy was it good! I was just wondering why our pizzas always look so sad compared to when people get it at the store? Sad as in flat not in amount of cheese. Maybe it deflates on the way over?

Last but not least today I was extra early to work so I stopped over at Manis Bakery for some lunch for breakfast. I ordered the classic club with side caesar (vegan style). Remember when I went to Swingers and I was upset that the waitress didn't care to ask if I wanted soy milk with my coffee since I ordered a vegan meal, well the lovely waitress today did! Now even though I usually take my coffee black and don't really care all that much that I wasn't offered soy milk at Swingers its just nice to ask! I never had the club here and it was SOOOO goood. Way better than some places with their sketchy "veggie" clubs. I can eat that breaded seitan for every meal!
